The Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech said that “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and wellbeing”.
What yoga actually is ?
The word yoga cames from Sanskrit and is related to english word yoke. Just as yoke joins an ox to a cart or a plow, yoga joins mind and body together in a well integrated union.
Yoga refers to a broad variety of ancient Indian spiritual practices . These practices are designed to liberate the individual from their ordinary, bound, unfree experience of the self and the world. What we get out of it depends upon what we bring into it. Our goals and purposes for doing yoga will determine what kind of positive effects it has on our life.
Developing Practice
During these virus shaken days many of us are seeking for online guidance on their yogic paths. A home practice is a great way to bring yoga into your daily life.
However, it can be difficult for some of us to do all that on our own in our messy bedrooms, so here are some tips which you can follow:-
1. Create a space
Many of us use lack of space as an excuse to avoid practice. However, at the end of day it doesn't matter that how much space you have, as long as you are not bumping in door frames or table legs. Your practice space needs only to be the size and shape of your yoga mat.
2. Invest in a sticky yoga mat
This may seem like no big deal, but the security that comes from firm footing is hard to overrate.
3. Create environment
Some people like to practice in silence, some likes to light candles or have a particular aroma. So make sure you are in environment which you prefer the most.
4. Set a time frame
When you practice on your own, there's no one around to help you to keep track of how much time has passed. So, it can be helpful to keep a timer for practice, so that you do not have to check the clock constantly.
5. Take breathing breaks
Breathing is a powerful tool for managing stress. During your break(not necessarily while practicing yoga) you can close your eyes, count your breaths, or you can simply relax the tensions that have crept into the respiratory muscles.
6. Create a schedule
Decide the time, when you are free and when you want to practice? Decide the amount of time you can dedicate for practice . Choose the techniques you would like to focus on, and balance among meditation, breathing and asana practices.
7. Start small
There is no "right" amount of time to do yoga for. If you’re a beginner, don’t
fall into the trap of trying to do yoga for hours on end. Your are simply aren't
trained to sustain it yet. You can start with as little as 5 minutes of daily yoga and you can gradually build your way up from there.
8. Track your progress
Use a calendar to track your progress and make it visible. Mark down every
time you follow through on your new habit. This will inspire you to keep going
even when things get difficult. You can also use habit-tracking apps.
9. Split your sessions
One simple trick you can use to make your yoga practice more enjoyable is to split it into two smaller sessions. This will allow you to easily increase your overall session length.
10. Reward yourself
Whatever gets rewarded gets repeated. Your brain is constantly associating
pain and pleasure to everything you do. So if you want your yoga habit to stick,
trick your brain by rewarding yourself right after you have completed your
session. It can be something as simple as giving yourself a pat on the back and
saying to yourself: " Good job, you made progress today!".
